What They Are Actually Being Offered

That line running through the Memorial room runs a great deal deeper than the bread and the cup. Ask a Witness whether they are saved and watch what happens. They will not say yes. They cannot say yes, and the reason is not humility. It is the system.

Here is what that system actually holds, in their own printed words. There are two classes. The hundred and forty-four thousand anointed ones, who go to heaven, and everyone else, called the great crowd, which is nearly every Witness you will ever meet at your door. The great crowd is not born again. The great crowd is not justified by faith. Their own literature states it without embarrassment: this group does not undergo a change of nature and therefore does not need the justification by faith and the imputed righteousness the anointed required. What it needs instead is actual human perfection in the flesh.

So what does the ransom sacrifice do for them? It does not give them everlasting life. It gives them a chance at everlasting life. They have to exercise faith in that chance during this life and do their utmost to measure up to Jehovah's requirements of holiness, in order to prove worthy enough to be let into the thousand-year kingdom at all. If they make it in, their past sins are wiped clean, but they walk through the door carrying the same sinful inclinations and the same personality they died with. The thousand years is a testing period. Over the length of it, they are expected to climb to actual moral perfection.

Then, at the end of the thousand years, after every bit of that, Satan is released for one final test. An indefinite number will fail it and be executed. The ones who pass are finally declared righteous on the basis of their own merit.

Read that last phrase again, because the entire system is sitting inside it. On the basis of their own merit. After a lifetime of meetings, hours, and door-to-door service. After a thousand additional years of testing. After surviving a final exam administered by Satan himself. The verdict at the end of all of it is one they earned.

Now set that down beside what the Bible says happens to a person the moment they repent and put their faith in Christ. Their sins are covered by His blood and they are completely forgiven. The person they used to be in Adam is crucified with Him, so that sin is no longer their master. They receive a new birth and become a new creation. They are declared righteous by faith, with their works contributing nothing whatsoever to it. The Holy Spirit comes to live inside them. Not one of those is a target to aim at. Every one of them is a finished transaction, and the receipts are 1 John 2:12, Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:6, John 3:3, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Romans 3:28, Ephesians 2:8-9, and Romans 8:9-11.

That is the theft. That is why this chapter exists and why it is the longest one here. Everything the Watchtower dangles at the far end of a thousand-year obstacle course, God hands a person free, at the door, before they have done one thing to deserve it. Their finish line is our starting line. Every person in that Kingdom Hall is spending an entire life running toward a place the gospel says you have to be standing in before you can run at all.

Placement: This section goes immediately after The Table and before The Testimony Nobody Gives.

The handoff works because The Table ends on the bread passing by untouched, and this opens with "That line running through the Memorial room runs a great deal deeper than the bread and the cup." The reader has just watched the line drawn at communion; now they find out the same line runs through salvation itself.

The Exchange

Here, the exchange I have been tracing through all of this stops being subtle and becomes written policy. The organization wraps you in everything: your congregation, your friendships, your family, your purpose, your schedule, your identity, every one of them threaded through the Kingdom Hall. One hand gives you that whole world, stamped with God's name. The other hand holds it hostage, because the same organization that gave it all to you will take every bit of it away if you leave, and it will tell the people you love most not to sit at a table with you again. Then it names your loss for you: you did not leave an organization, you left Jehovah. That is the exchange at its most naked. The counterfeit in one hand, the separation in the other, and a grieving person in the middle who thinks God Himself stopped speaking to them, when it was only ever men who hung up the phone.

The seed never stands a chance here, because it is never actually handed to you. It arrives pre-sprouted from the Society's greenhouse, interpretation already attached, so what gets planted in you is not the Word but their reading of it. That is the seed snatched from the path before understanding, at industrial scale, and no one I love inside it has ever been allowed to hold the raw seed in their own two hands.

Two Words

If you found yourself in this chapter, if this is the room you are sitting in right now, then let me talk to you like there is nobody else here and nothing to report afterward, because here is what I most want you to hear. He already told you who He is. The Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, in His own words, about Himself. He did not send an angel to say it for Him, and He did not send an angel to do the saving either. I want to leave you with the question that ended all of it for me. Why would the One who created you send anyone other than Himself to save you? Sit with that question until it lands all the way. An angel dying for you would have been a creature running an errand. The Creator stepping down into His own creation to die for you Himself is love without a ceiling. That love, His personal, in-the-flesh, it-was-always-Me love, is the exact thing this organization is stealing from you. Now look at how cheaply the theft was done. Two words. One little a slipped into John 1:1. One little other slipped into Colossians 1:16. That is the entire heist. Two inserted words, and the God who came for you Himself becomes an angel sent on His behalf, your Savior becomes your fellow creature, and the love with no ceiling gets a ceiling nailed over it. Do not let two words that exist in no Greek manuscript on the face of this earth stand between you and the One who came Himself.

Who Was Really Knocking

Here is the twist I can only see from the far side of it, the one with His sovereignty and, I am convinced, His sense of humor written all over it. In the strangest possible way, I found Jesus through the Jehovah's Witnesses. The system most famous on this earth for knocking on doors turned out to be the knock on mine. I pulled on the thread of their two little words, and what was waiting at the end of that thread was not just their error. It was Him. The very One that every single system here has been trying to take from all of us, standing there the whole time, exactly where the digging led. He even told us this is how He works, in His own words, in Revelation 3:20: Behold, I stand at the door, and knock. This organization taught me to expect a knock at the door. It just never told me who was really doing the knocking.

You do not have to knock on one more door to find Him, and there is no quota standing between you and Him. The redemption is already paid for, already finished, already yours for the taking, and there is nothing left to earn. He does not want your hours. He just wants you.

The Arrival Nobody Saw

Understand what happened after 1914, because the failure is not the interesting part. The rescue is. When the date came and the world did not end, the teaching was not withdrawn. It was moved indoors. He did come, they said. He came invisibly, and He has been ruling invisibly ever since. That one adjustment converted a falsified prediction into an unfalsifiable one, and it is the only reason the doctrine survived a century of being wrong.

The proof text is Acts 1:9-11. Jesus is taken up, a cloud hides Him from their sight, and two men in white tell the disciples He will come back in the same way they watched Him go. Witnesses read that and conclude the manner of His going was that He vanished from view, unnoticed by the world, so His return will be unnoticed too.

Look carefully at what that reading does. Disappearing from view was not the manner of the ascension. It was the result of it. The manner was visible and bodily. They stood there watching Him with their own eyes until the clouds got in the way, which is precisely what the text says happened, and the promise is that the manner will match.

The words the New Testament itself uses for His return say the same thing twice over. One is apokalupsis, which means an unveiling, the removing of a cover from something hidden. The other is epiphaneia, a shining forth, an appearing, and it is the same word used of His first coming, which was as visible as a birth. Neither word can be bent to mean concealed. Jesus said the sign of the Son of Man would appear in the sky and all the nations of the earth would mourn, and that they would see Him coming with power and great glory.

So the doctrine that rescued 1914 requires the return of Christ to be the one thing Scripture insists it will never be, which is unnoticed. A failed prophecy was saved by a second doctrine asking you to believe He arrived and no one saw. Not the world. Not the nations. Not you.

The Trap History Springs

Sit with the trap that history springs, because there is no way out of it. If the organization was God's reliable channel of truth in Russell's day, then the doctrine you hold now departed from that channel. If it is God's reliable channel now, then it printed error about the very identity of Christ for its first fifty years. One of those has to be true, there is no third option, and either one breaks the claim the entire structure stands on.

Here is the serious part, the costly part, and I say it with love and with fear for you at the same time: you are about to see all of this with your own eyes. Original print. Their pages. After you look, whatever you decide to do, one thing will never be true of you again. You will not be able to honestly say you were never shown. By the standard this organization itself taught you, the moment you are shown the truth is the moment your responsibility before God begins.

Check It Yourself

Before you scroll any further, I want to give you one thing you do not have to take my word for, or anyone else's. Go to wol.jw.org. That is the Watchtower Online Library. It is not my site, it is not a critic's site, and it is not apostate material. It is theirs, it is free, it is searchable, and almost everything I have shown you in this chapter can be read there in the organization's own wording, with the dates and page numbers still attached. Do not read my summary of what it says. Do not read anyone else's. Read the page itself, with your own eyes, and then decide.

There is one thing worth noticing while you are in there. The public library begins at 1950 for The Watchtower and 1980 for Awake, and the bulk of what is easily searchable starts around the year 2000. The earlier decades, the ones with the 1914 and 1925 predictions in their original wording, are not in it. Those exist only in archived scans held by collectors and libraries. I am not going to tell you what to make of that. I am telling you it is true, so that when you go looking for the oldest material and cannot find it in their own library, you will already know why.

What the Watchtower Actually Published

I could have told you all of that and left it at my word. I am not going to. Everything below is their own ink

The Man Who Wrote the Doctorine From the Inside Speaks Out

The man speaking in the following video is Raymond Franz. He was a former member of the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses who resigned and was later disfellowshipped. Following his departure, he wrote the influential 1983 book Crisis of Conscience, detailing the inner workings and leadership of the Watch Tower Society. This specific interview clip is from the 1986 documentary Witnesses of Jehovah (produced by Jeremiah Films).

    Don’t Ask for an Explanation

Listen to what happens when you are baptized into the organization  as a child and finally start asking what you’ve come into an eternal spiritual agreement with 13 years later. Forever matters. Your choice on where you spend it matters even more.

Up Next: A doctrine that asks nothing of you and promises everyone comes home?
